Territory
Acqua Santo Stefano is a small fraction in the Municipality of Foligno positioned on the western side of the Umbrian Marchigiano Apennine ridge which moves to the south from Monte Pennino (1571 metres). It is made up of various inhabited settlements joined together under the name of Acqua Santo Stefano because of the presence of a spring dedicated to the Saint. The inhabited area at an altitude of 950 metres is surrounded by small cultivated areas, vast wooded areas and by pastures that spread up to the highest peaks. It can be affirmed, also supported by recent research, that this territory has been inhabited since protohistory. It is believed that the viability was most of all from peak to peak and that it was strengthened in time by one or more connecting side roads between the Via Flaminia, which leads from Rome to the Adriatic Coast and Via della Spina, which starts in Spoleto and allows passage to The Marches. Such road systems, used most of all for the movement of flocks from the nursina area (Norcia, Castelluccio, Visso) to the valleys of Spoleto and vice-versa, result active until the last century. The oldest inhabitants of these places still have memories of these activities.
